Capital of Culture
Probably the simplest explanation of what Culture is was encapsulated by one of Liverpool’s former bishops: “It’s what we do around here.”
Culture is at the heart of who we are. It is one of the basic ways by which we establish our personal and collective identity. It helps us feel we belong.
It is formed and informed by our underlying values and by what we sense the community around us accepts as normal. It is our default mode in life. Although we are mostly unaware of our own cultural peculiarities, it none the less affects how we live, speak, act, and have our being.
Culture is the collective uniqueness by which one group of people can be identified from another. It is most easily recognised when expressed through language, arts, morals and lifestyle choices.
And whilst we might identify with the prevailing culture of the geographical region in which we were born and live, we will also identify more closely with one or more of a multitude of ‘micro-cultures’ that enrich and inform this overarching way of being.
Culture is not static but slowly yet constantly changing. And just as an individual’s culture is affected by the influences they encounter around them, so the overarching culture of an area or group of people is affected by those who come to live among them.
Culture is also changed by significant events such as celebrations, tragedies and trauma. It is affected by media and through the mass global awareness this has generated in our day.
Merseyfest has consistently and positively been affecting our regional culture through encouraging people to break down barriers by working together for a common good.
